#18: Study, Boy's Face – 30 paintings in 30 days

Here is today’s effort for 30 paintings in 30 days. This started out as an ink sketch, but I thought a self-wash would be a good way to go with it. Both the original ink sketch and the wash are included.

A “self-wash” (I made up that name) is when I use a watercolor brush on an ink drawing, but I use the water to dissolve some of the ink to create the washes.

As with most of my faces, the centerline is distorted; this just seems to be something I do, and it gives the works some emotion so I’m not too inclined to try to change it. I also seem to like horizontal lines with faces.

7″ x 7″ Stillman & Birn notebook, Beta series paper. Pen is Platinum Izumo Yagumonuri (my “cloud pen” because of the Maki-e artwork on it) with EF (extra fine) nib. Ink is Pilot Yama-Guri, a brown ink that shades to purple when you do a wash with it. I think the brown sticks a bit more to the paper than the other colors in the ink.
