#7: Clouds in sky exercise – 30 in 30

I’m taking on online course on painting birds in watercolor with Val Webb (she has a Facebook page if anyone is interested). I watched a video yesterday for the “birds in flight” class, and it included a long segment with various ways to paint clouds in the sky.

I did a small (4×6) exercise using a damp sponge to pick up color from the sky to make clouds, followed by adding brown/purple colors to the undersides and stippling those with the sponge as well. I would have to say this is an excellent technique. I’m going to try it on a larger piece soon.

One can change the appearance of the clouds by changing sponges, pressure, using or not using a sweeping or twisting motion, and so on. You can also do some back painting (which I did not for my exercise) to create more definition at the tops of clouds.
