Today (June 26th, 2013) a Google search with the word ‘gay’ in it will give you a rainbow result. This poem sprang out of me in happy consequence.
I didn’t need to be black in the civil rights era to understand why – because we all know oppression, even if we can only read it in another’s eyes.
I didn’t need to be a veteran to understand what’s lost – because we are all veterans, even if we fight things no one else understands.
I didn’t need to be gay to understand that love is universal – because we are all lovers, even if we love unconventionally.
I don’t need to be a whistleblower to understand the value of transparency – because we are all truth-tellers, even if the truths are intimate.
